Crochet CandyCane

Crochet CandyCane

Video Tutorial: Crochet Candy Cane

Video Tutorial:  Left Hand Version

Red Section
With red yarn Chain 50.

3 SC in each chain across. It will start to twist and be very uneven.

White Section
With white yarn Chain 50.

3 SC in each chain across. It will start to twist and be very uneven.

Straighten each individual section out so the twist is turning one way. Once that is accomplished, join the two sections together, twisting them together to form the candycane. Once they are evenly twisted, secure each end with yarn so they won't come apart. Sew in all the tails. Run a pipe cleaner through the center of the candycane. Twist the yarn section in the direction to tighten the yarn on the pipecleaner. This will grab the fibers of the pipecleaner tighten it up nice and neat. You can hotglue or dab craft glue to the pipecleaner and yarn so it will stay in place and not come apart. Shape project in to a candycane. I have found that fishing line or clear craft line will work very well for an invisible hanger.

Which loop to crochet under - Front Loop - Back Loop or Both Loops

If there is no indication to go through the front loop of a stitch or back loop, what I do is put my hook below both loops.  The reason is that I find it looks nicer and will be more secure than one loop.   For example,  when I was first learning to crochet, I was following instructions from a leaflet I had purchased.  It was for a shell afghan.  The instructions were telling me to put the hook through the back loop of the single crochet.  By the time I was done, I had big holes with each shell I had made. The shell is a heavy combination of crochet stitches, so it is bound to pull on the individual strand creating big holes.  Going under two strands will keep it more secure and evenly distribute the slack.  That taught me to go through both loops of the single crochet for that pattern and any other pattern that does not have a decorative purpose.  I also recognized that many of the patterns were advising to go through the back or front loop, when there is no decorative purpose. In the end, it all boils down to your personal preference and the combination of stitches that work best for you.

Finding a Multiple - Increasing a Crochet Round

This is going to explain how you come up with a multiple, your own combination of stitches, when you are making a round. In each round, there is a set number of stitches.  I am using 30 with this example.

When you increase a round, you take the amount of stitches and divide the amount to find increase points. You will want to increase evenly around.  Since you have 30 stitches, you will take 30 divide it by 5, this give you 6. When you are finished, you will have completed 35 stitches, 5 times on that round.

If you find that you want more increases, you divide 30 by 6, this will give you 5.  What this means is the last number you get, you work the increase in that stitch.   You work 1 stitch in each of the next 4, work an increase in the 5th.  You will do that 6 times. On completion, the round will have 36 stitches.

If you need more increase stitches than 5 or 6, you can take 30, divide it by 2, this will give you 15.  This means that you work one stitch, work an increase in the next stitch.  This is what I call increasing in every other stitch.  You will take 30+15, you get 45 stitches on this round.  You have increased 15 times.

If you need a different combination, you take 30 divide it by 3, this will give you 10.  You work 1 stitch in each of the next 2, increase in the next stitch. When you complete this round, you get 40 stitches, increasing 10 times.

There are times that I have thrown in an additional increase at the end of the round, which is going to throw off the multiple. That's alright because the idea is to evenly increase and find the best size.

Appreciating Hand Made Crochet - Crochet Pricing Recommendations

How do you determine what you will charge for a crochet piece?

How much should we charge when selling crochet work? The formula I went by was double the cost of your materials plus half. I never the thought that was enough, so used the formula as a starting point only.

Crochet is under appreciated with the time that it takes to make larger projects. It can take several weeks or longer to make a large afghan. The same is true when making doily's. Intricate lace can take days and weeks to complete depending on the size.

Crochet lace doily's have always been my favorite to crochet. When I would sell my work at craft events, people would tell me that it was so expensive. Many of the doily's may take two days or more to complete a doily! I wondered how many of them would go to work for $15 or $25 over two days. $15-$25 was an average price that I asked for each doily. To me the doily's were under-priced! There were always some that would pay the price I was asking.

Realistically you will not be able to get all of your time, just don't forget to include some of your time in the price of your work.  People who sell their handmade crochet tend to under price their work. I challenge everyone selling crochet to ask just a little bit more.

Video Tutorial: Crochet Galaxy Stitch - Snowflake

The multiple for this stitch is 3 + 3. Unfortunately the video tutorial has it incorrect. It can be done as 2 + 3 but it may turn out a little fuller.

The amount of stitches will remain the same for each row. Each center joined segment of the stitch will be offset each row, which creates the unique effect of this stitch. It reminds me of those little 6 point plastic beads.

Working on chain foundation: This stitch is worked with 3 stitches joined. It will be a combination of a single crochet and 2 half-double crochet joined. You put the hook through the next chain, draw up a loop. Leave the two loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook, skip one chain and in the next put the hook through the chain and pull through the yarn; you will have 4 loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn over your hook, Skip another chain and in the next chain insert your hook and draw through the yarn. You will have 6 loops on your hook. Draw the yarn through all 6 loops. Pull the yarn through one more time to secure the loops. Continue on by drawing your first loop through the previous center joined loop. The rest of the stitch is worked the same for the chain foundation. Half Double Crochet in the last stitch, CH 2 turn.

Row 2: You put the hook through the chain next to the hook, draw up a loop. Leave the two loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook, put the hook through the center joining of the stitch in the previous row and pull through the yarn through the loop; you will have 4 loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn over your hook, put the hook through the center joining of the stitch in the previous row and pull through the yarn and pull the yarn through the loop. You will have 6 loops on your hook. Draw the yarn through all 6 loops. Pull the yarn through one more time to secure the loops. Continue on by drawing your first loop through the previous center joined loop. Half Double Crochet in the last stitch, CH 2 turn.

Tip for trying a new #Crochet Stitch, Pattern or Technique

We all know that crochet can be frustrating at times when trying a new stitch, pattern or technique. What has worked for me in the past is to stop for a few hours or even a few days.  Most likely it will make more sense at a later time.

I am providing two playlists, the right and left hand version, that will provide the beginner crochet stitches.
